Japanese Forest Grass

Plant in spring or fall in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil in partial to full shade, spacing 18–24 inches apart. Japanese forest grass (Hakonechloa) is the most elegant ornamental grass for shaded settings, producing graceful, arching, bright golden-yellow foliage that glows in dappled light. Incorporate compost into the planting area. Mulch to retain moisture. Consistent moisture is important.

Cut plants back to the ground in late winter before new growth begins. Keep soil consistently moist throughout the growing season. The golden, arching foliage turns attractive shades of pink and bronze in fall before the plant goes dormant. Fertilize lightly in spring.
