Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in well-drained, average to fertile soil, spacing 18–24 inches apart. Hollyhock is a classic cottage garden plant that produces tall spikes studded with large, bowl-shaped flowers. Spring Celebrities is a compact, first-year blooming series. Incorporate compost into the planting area and water well. Choose a sheltered site, as hollyhocks are prone to toppling in wind.

Care Tips

Stake plants in exposed or windy locations to prevent toppling. Deadhead spent flowers to extend the blooming season. Hollyhocks are susceptible to rust fungus — remove affected leaves and choose a site with good air circulation. All parts are mildly toxic. Fertilize in spring. The tall, stately flower spikes are classic cottage garden elements — outstanding against fences and walls and beloved by hummingbirds and bees.
