Pairs well with

Blue wood aster brings pale blue into a shade planting in fall, which is a color the woodland asters do not offer. Symphyotrichum cordifolium is a native perennial growing 2 to 5 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide in part shade, hardy from Zone 3 through Zone 8, and it settles in over two seasons.

Clouds of small daisies open in late summer and continue through October, pale blue to nearly white with yellow centers, carried in loose sprays on branching stems. Asters are a keystone genus, and this one is one of the last nectar sources standing when the season closes. It feeds pearl crescent caterpillars.

The name comes from the heart-shaped leaves at the base of the plant, which are coarse and toothed and hold through the season.

This grows wild at woodland edges and in open woods, so it handles shade, root competition, and dry soil once established. It self-sows freely, which suits a naturalized planting or a woodland edge better than a tidy bed. It gets tall enough to lean in deep shade, and cutting the stems back by half in June makes a shorter, denser plant. Deer generally leave it alone.

Exceptional Roses

EXCEPTIONAL ROSES!

Recently, I received a #3 pot Wollerton Old Hall Rose, a #3 Alnwick Rose, and a #2 pot Sweet Mademoiselle rose from Spotswood Greenery. I could not be more pleased and grateful. All plants are in perfect condition. Each is supported by incredibly healthy roots, several Charles Atlas-like stems, and beautiful foliage. Packaging was very secure. Clearly done with care! Shipping was quite prompt. Now, pricing! I've grown roses for 40 of my 67 years. In that time, it's easy for me to say that Spotswood has exceeded every other source without question. I found three roses in stock I had wanted! The quality is champion! The prices are very good, excellent when one buys at the free shipping level! Worth every penny! Thank you, every one, on the Spotswood Greenery Team!

Quick shipping

Bought a David Austin rose; it arrived quickly however it had some damage upon arrival. Ended up pruning and defoliating a good bit to get rid of the broken cane and pest damage, but I expect it to be a beautiful bush down the road.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, moist to dry, well-drained soil. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting. This native aster is highly adaptable to shade, clay, and dry conditions.

Care Tips

Plant in part to full shade. Morning sun is fine.
Plant in average to humus-rich soil that drains well.
Water through the first summer. Established plants handle dry shade, including the ground under trees.
Feed lightly, if at all.
Stems can lean in deep shade. Cutting them back by a third in late spring gives a bushier plant.
Leave stems standing over winter, and cut them to the ground in early spring.
Plants spread by underground stems and self-sow into a loose patch. Pull extras in spring to keep them in bounds.
Divide in spring when the patch gets crowded.
Powdery mildew can show up in late summer. It is mostly cosmetic.
