Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall, spacing 3–5 feet apart. Black chokeberry is a native shrub notable for its exceptional adaptability — it tolerates poor soil, wet conditions, clay, and drought once established. No special soil preparation is required. Dig the planting hole to the depth of the root ball, backfill with existing soil, and water well. Mulch lightly to conserve moisture.

Care Tips

Prune in late winter to remove the oldest stems and maintain an open, vigorous habit. This shrub spreads slowly by suckers — remove them to keep a tidy form, or allow them to naturalize. Black chokeberry provides outstanding fall foliage in brilliant reds and oranges, followed by persistent dark berries that birds love. No regular fertilizing is needed. One of the easiest and most rewarding native shrubs.
