Chance Encounter Shadowland® Hosta

Plant in spring or fall in moist, humus-rich soil in a shaded or partially shaded location. Hostas are among the most reliable and versatile shade perennials available. Incorporate compost into the planting area, space plants 24–36 inches apart to allow for their spread, and water thoroughly after planting. Mulch 2–3 inches deep to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Avoid hot, dry, or sunny sites.

The main pest challenge with hostas is slugs, which chew ragged holes in the leaves. Address this by applying slug bait or diatomaceous earth around plants in spring when new growth emerges. Divide clumps every four to five years in spring to prevent overcrowding. Cut foliage back to the ground in fall after frost. Top-dress with compost each spring. No fertilizing is needed in organically rich soil.
