Planting Tips

Plant in fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Set the crown 2–3 inches below the soil surface. Provide a sturdy trellis or support structure. Space 3–4 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch to keep the root zone cool.

Care Tips

Water deeply and consistently throughout the growing season. This is a Group 3 clematis- cut it back hard to 12–18 inches from the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. This hard annual pruning is essential, as Rouge Cardinal blooms on new wood each season. Feed with a balanced fertilizer in spring after cutting back and again in midsummer. The velvety crimson-red flowers are exceptionally rich in color.
