Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, well-drained soil. Highly adaptable to poor, rocky, and dry soils. Space 15–20 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting.

Care Tips

Water regularly after planting; once established it is highly drought tolerant. For the most vivid foliage color and a more shrub-like form, cut hard back to the ground every 2–3 years in early spring- this sacrifices the smoky plumes but produces dramatically larger, more richly colored leaves on vigorous new shoots. If the smoky effect is desired, prune lightly, removing only the oldest stems. Largely pest-free. The extraordinary orange, red, and purple fall foliage is among the finest of any native tree or large shrub.
