Pairs well with

Pow Wow Wildberry holds a deep rose-purple that stays saturated from the first flowers in June through the last ones in fall. Echinacea purpurea Pow Wow Wildberry grows 20 to 24 inches tall and 12 to 16 inches wide in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 5 through Zone 8, and blooms the first season after planting.

Flowering starts in early summer and continues into fall, heavy across the whole plant because it branches freely and sets buds along the stems rather than only at the tips. It reblooms without needing deadheading, though cutting spent flowers keeps it tidier.

Leave the last seedheads standing when the season ends. Goldfinches strip them through late fall and winter, and the dark cones hold their shape under snow.

The compact size fits a container, a front-of-border planting, or a mass planting. Purple coneflower takes drought, heat, humidity, poor soil, and clay once established. Full sun gives the sturdiest stems and the heaviest bloom. Deer generally leave it alone.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average, well-drained soil. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch lightly around the base.

Care Tips

Water consistently the first season; established plants are drought tolerant. Deadhead to encourage continuous bloom from midsummer into fall, or leave seed heads for birds. Cut back to the ground in late fall or early spring. Divide every 3–4 years in spring. Watch for aster yellows and remove affected plants immediately. The rich magenta-pink flowers on a compact, well-branched plant are a vivid, long-lasting addition to the sunny perennial border.
