White Heather

Plant in spring or fall in acidic, well-drained to dry soil in a sunny to partially sunny location. Heather requires acidic soil with excellent drainage — wet, clay, or alkaline soils will kill it. Amend soil with peat and coarse sand if needed to achieve proper drainage. Space plants 12–18 inches apart and water moderately after planting. Avoid wet conditions at all times.

Shear lightly after the flower display to remove spent blooms and keep plants compact. Do not cut into old, leafless wood — heather does not regenerate from old wood. Feed with an acid fertilizer in early spring. Mulch with pine bark or acidic wood chips. White heather is traditionally considered lucky. In appropriate conditions it is long-lived and provides flowers and interesting winter foliage across multiple seasons.
