Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Space 2–3 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch generously to retain moisture.

Care Tips

Water consistently and deeply- this plant prefers reliably moist conditions and will struggle in dry soil. The rich, chocolate-brown foliage is the primary ornamental feature and is most vivid with adequate moisture and some shade. Cut back dead stems in late fall or early spring. Divide every 4–5 years in spring. Largely pest-free. An outstanding foliage plant for the shade garden, combining dramatically with silver or chartreuse companions.
