Arnolds Promise Witch Hazel

Plant in spring or fall in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil, spacing 8–12 feet apart. Arnold's Promise is the most widely grown and reliable witch hazel variety, producing masses of fragrant, bright yellow, strap-petaled flowers on bare stems in late winter to very early spring — often while snow is still present. Dig a generous planting hole, amend with compost, and water well. Mulch generously.

Minimal pruning is needed — simply remove any dead wood in early spring after flowering. Arnold's Promise is slow to establish but very long-lived once settled. The flowers are frost-tolerant and persist for two to three weeks. Excellent fragrance. Fall foliage turns beautiful shades of orange and red. Fertilize in spring. One of the most valuable garden plants for winter and very early spring interest when little else is blooming.
