Jelena Russian Sage

Plant in spring, spacing 24–30 inches apart in average, well-drained soil. Russian sage is one of the most drought-tolerant and heat-tolerant perennials available. It absolutely requires well-drained to dry soil — wet or heavy clay soils will kill it. No soil amendment is needed. Water regularly for the first few weeks after planting, then reduce significantly as the plant becomes established.

Cut all stems back hard to about 6 inches above the ground in early spring before new growth begins. This is essential — without cutting back, the plant becomes very woody and produces fewer flowers. Once established, Russian sage needs very little watering and no fertilizing. The silvery stems and lavender-blue flowers provide a long season of airy, fragrant color that is extremely attractive to bees and butterflies.
