Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall, spacing 18–24 inches apart in average, well-drained soil. New England aster is a native plant that adapts well to garden conditions. Water regularly through the first growing season. A light mulch helps retain moisture. Choose a site with good air circulation, which helps prevent powdery mildew in humid climates.

Care Tips

For the best, most compact and bushy plants, pinch back the stem tips by about one-third in early to mid-June. This delays bloom slightly but results in a fuller plant with many more flowers. Divide clumps every two to three years in early spring to maintain vigor. This aster is an important late-season nectar source for migrating monarch butterflies and other pollinators. No heavy fertilizing is needed.
