Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil amended with compost. Space 18-24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch around the base. Choose a permanent location- lupines resent root disturbance.

Care Tips

Water consistently throughout the growing season. Deadhead spent flower spikes promptly to encourage rebloom and extend the plant's life. West Country lupines are more vigorous and longer-lived than older strains, but still benefit from deadheading and cool, moist conditions. Allow some self-sowing to perpetuate the planting. Watch for aphids and slugs in cool, wet weather. The deep purple-black flower spikes of Blacksmith are among the darkest and most dramatic in the lupine world.
