Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil amended with generous compost. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball. Space 8–12 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 3–4 inches deep, keeping mulch away from the trunk.

Care Tips

Water deeply and regularly the first 2–3 seasons. Once established it tolerates moderate drought. Little pruning is needed- remove dead or crossing branches in late spring after flowering. Ann blooms later than many magnolias, which reduces the risk of frost damage to the buds. Fertilize lightly in spring with an acid fertilizer. The large, deep red-purple, tulip-shaped flowers are produced in abundance in mid-spring. A reliable, beautiful small tree for residential gardens.
