Planting Tips

Plant in spring in acidic, moist, well-drained soil. Nova Zembla is one of the most cold-hardy rhododendrons available, making it a top choice for northern gardens. Set the root ball at or slightly above grade and mulch deeply to protect the shallow root system. Plant in a sheltered spot protected from harsh winter winds. Water thoroughly at planting.

Care Tips

Deadhead after the bright red flowers fade by snapping off spent clusters above the new growth buds. Fertilize with an acid fertilizer in early spring. Water consistently — this rhododendron does not tolerate drought well despite its cold hardiness. Replenish mulch each year. Very reliable and rewarding in appropriate conditions.
