Fountain Grass

Plant in spring or fall in average, well-drained soil, spacing 24–36 inches apart. Fountain grass forms an elegant, arching clump of fine-textured foliage topped by fluffy, bottlebrush-like seed heads in late summer. It adapts to average to lean conditions without special preparation. Water regularly for the first few weeks, then reduce as the plant becomes established. Handles heat and dry conditions well.

Cut plants back to 4–6 inches in late winter before new growth begins. The fluffy, tan seed heads persist through fall and winter, providing attractive structure in the garden. Important note: most Pennisetum fountain grass species are NOT cold-hardy in northern climates and must be treated as annuals or dug and stored indoors over winter. No fertilizing needed in average soils. Excellent for mixed borders, containers, and seasonal displays.
