Red Head Fountain Grass

Plant in spring or fall in average, well-drained soil, spacing 24–30 inches apart. Red Head is a fountain grass variety with distinctive, deep burgundy-red seed heads that appear over the arching, green foliage clump from late summer through fall — unusually dark colored compared to the typical tan-white of standard fountain grass. It adapts to average conditions without special preparation.

Cut plants back to 4–6 inches in late winter before new growth begins. The deep, burgundy-red seed heads are the defining ornamental feature — dramatically different from standard fountain grass. No fertilizing needed in average soils. The combination of arching green foliage and deep red seed heads provides outstanding textural interest from late summer through fall. Important note: most Pennisetum fountain grass species are NOT cold-hardy and may not overwinter in northern climates.
