Pairs well with

Fuchsia-pink flowers so saturated they read nearly red smother this plant in spring. Rhododendron 'Landmark' grows 5 to 6 feet tall and wide in part shade, hardy from Zone 5 through Zone 8.

The color intensity is what sets it apart, holding rather than fading pale as the flowers age.

The small-leaved rhododendrons, sometimes called lepidotes, differ from the big-leaf types in more than size. They flower earlier, take more sun, handle cold better, and the foliage turns mahogany or plum through winter instead of staying green. The leaves are aromatic, releasing a spicy scent when brushed. In colder gardens they behave as semi-evergreens, dropping a share of the older interior leaves over winter while holding the newer growth at the branch tips. That thinning is normal and the plant refoliates in spring.

Acidic soil is necessary, roughly pH 4.5 to 6.0, with good drainage and steady moisture. Mulch the shallow roots.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring in acidic, moist, well-drained soil with afternoon shade protection. Landmark is a compact, rounded rhododendron with attractive, deep pink flowers. Amend soil with peat or acidic compost if needed. Set the root ball at or just above grade, mulch 3–4 inches deep, and water well. Keep consistently moist through the first growing season.

Care Tips

Remove spent flower clusters after bloom. Feed with an acid fertilizer in early spring. Keep soil consistently moist throughout the growing season. Replenish mulch annually. Landmark's compact, rounded habit makes it a manageable rhododendron for smaller garden spaces where full-sized varieties would be too large. A reliable, attractive rhododendron with the classic qualities the genus is known for.
