Pairs well with

Rich purple flowers cover this evergreen in spring on a plant that handles summer heat better than most rhododendrons. This Proven Winners® selection, Rhododendron 'LAVJ2011', sold as Dandy Man® Purple, grows 6 to 8 feet tall and wide in part shade, hardy from Zone 4 through Zone 8.

It resists root rot and leaf spot, the two problems that most often shorten a rhododendron's life in humid climates.

The large-leaf rhododendrons hold their foliage year-round rather than thinning like the small-leaved types. Below about 25 degrees the leaves droop and curl up, curling tighter the colder it gets, and they open again within hours once temperatures rise. It looks alarming the first winter and it is entirely normal, a water-conserving response rather than a sign of trouble.

At six to eight feet this is a screening shrub rather than a foundation plant. Acidic soil is necessary, roughly pH 4.5 to 6.0, with good drainage and steady moisture. Mulch the shallow roots.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, acidic soil (pH 4.5–6.0) with generous organic matter. Space 4–5 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 2–3 inches deep, keeping mulch away from the crown.

Care Tips

Water deeply and consistently throughout the growing season. Rhododendrons have shallow roots and need reliable moisture. Prune lightly immediately after flowering- rhododendrons bloom on old wood and pruning at other times removes next year's flower buds. Fertilize in spring with an acid azalea/rhododendron fertilizer. Monitor for lace bugs in summer. The vivid, deep purple-violet flower trusses are bold and abundantly produced in spring- an excellent, well-performing landscape rhododendron with good cold hardiness.
