Plant in spring once the soil has warmed, spacing plants 18–24 inches apart. Coneflowers adapt well to average garden soils and do not need amendments unless your soil is extremely poor. Water regularly for the first few weeks after planting to help roots establish. Once settled in, they are quite drought tolerant and handle heat very well.

Deadhead spent blooms throughout summer to keep new flowers coming. In fall, consider leaving some seed heads standing — birds love them through the winter months. Divide clumps every three to four years in early spring if they become overcrowded. These are tough, easy-care plants that reward minimal attention with season-long color.
