Pairs well with

Rosy-purple flower spikes rise like wands above crinkled, green foliage in mid-summer. Unlike its fuzzy cousin 'Lamb's Ear', this variety has smooth leaves and is highly resistant to pests and disease.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in average, well-drained to moist soil, spacing 18–24 inches apart. Hummelo is a hedge betony with dense, upright spikes of rosy-purple flowers produced over an exceptionally long season from early summer through fall. Unlike lamb's ears, Hummelo is grown for its flowers rather than its foliage. It adapts to average conditions without special preparation.

Care Tips

Deadhead spent flower spikes consistently to encourage continuous blooming through the very long flowering season. Cut back by about one-half after the main flush to encourage fresh growth. Divide every three to four years in spring. No heavy fertilizing needed. Hummelo is outstanding for pollinators — the flower spikes are magnets for bees and butterflies. The long bloom season and tidy, upright habit make this one of the most underused but rewarding perennials for sunny borders.
