Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring, spacing 18–24 inches apart in average, well-drained soil. This coneflower thrives in lean to average garden conditions and handles heat and drought well once established. Avoid overly rich or wet soils. Water regularly for the first few weeks, then reduce watering as the plant settles in. It is a tough, adaptable native plant that rewards minimal attention.

Care Tips

Deadhead regularly throughout summer for continuous bloom, or allow seed heads to develop in fall for birds. Divide every three to four years in spring. The vivid, hot-red flowers are a bold statement in the summer garden and attract bees and butterflies throughout the blooming season. No heavy fertilizing is needed — lean conditions produce the best flowering. Very heat and drought tolerant.
