Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring once soil has warmed, spacing 18–24 inches apart in average, well-drained soil. Coneflowers are tough native prairie plants that prefer average to lean conditions — avoid overly rich or wet soils. Water regularly for the first few weeks after planting, then reduce as the plant becomes established and drought tolerant. A light mulch helps through the first season.

Care Tips

Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continuous flowering through the season, or leave seed heads standing in fall to attract goldfinches and other seed-eating birds. Divide clumps every three to four years in early spring to keep plants vigorous. An important nectar plant for bees and butterflies. No heavy fertilizing is needed. The deep rose-pink flowers with a darker center are among the most richly colored of the coneflower introductions.
