Urge to Splurge Spurge

Plant in spring, spacing 18–24 inches apart in average to lean, well-drained soil. Spurge tolerates poor, dry soils and actually performs better without rich amendment or heavy fertilizing. Good drainage is important. Water moderately after planting and reduce as the plant establishes its drought tolerance. A light mulch helps during the first season.

Cut plants back by about one-half after the bright spring bloom to maintain a compact, tidy mound and prevent the center from opening up. Important safety note: spurge exudes a milky white sap that can severely irritate skin and eyes — always wear gloves and wash hands thoroughly after handling or pruning. No regular fertilizing is needed. Very drought tolerant once established.
