Plant in spring or fall in average to lean, well-drained soil. Space 12–15 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting. Sharp drainage, especially in winter, is essential for long-term survival.

Water regularly after planting; once established dianthus is moderately drought tolerant and prefers somewhat drier conditions. Shear back by about one-third after the first bloom flush to encourage repeat flowering and maintain a compact, tidy habit. Feed lightly with a balanced fertilizer in early spring. Avoid heavy soil amendment. Deer resistant and largely pest-free.
