Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Space 8–12 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch generously. A male and female plant are needed for berry production.

Care Tips

Water consistently after planting; once established it is quite adaptable to moist, average, and even dry shade conditions. Little pruning is needed. Fertilize lightly in spring. The tiny, fragrant yellow flowers appear in early spring before the leaves. The brilliant red berries in fall are outstanding for birds and the aromatic foliage turns brilliant golden-yellow in fall. The host plant for the spicebush swallowtail butterfly. An exceptional, multi-season native shrub.
