Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, well-drained to dry soil. Space 2–3 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting. Common milkweed has deep roots and strongly resents being moved- choose a permanent location.

Care Tips

Water regularly the first season; once established it is highly drought tolerant. Common milkweed spreads by underground runners to form colonies over time- divide in spring to control spread if needed, or allow to naturalize in a wildflower meadow or informal area. The fragrant, mauve-pink flower clusters are outstanding for monarchs and all pollinators. Cut dead stems in early spring. Do not divide or transplant established plants. The most important host plant for monarch butterfly caterpillars in eastern North America. Largely pest-free.
