Sombrero Salsa Red is a true red rather than a red-leaning pink, with overlapping petals around a dark brown cone. Echinacea 'Balsomsed', sold as Sombrero Salsa Red, grows 18 to 24 inches tall and wide in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 4 through Zone 8.
Bloom starts in early summer and reblooms into fall, heavy across the plant because it branches freely and carries a high bud count. Deadheading keeps the run going.
The stems are stiff and hold the flowers upright without staking, and the habit stays compact enough for a container or the front of a border.
Leave the last seedheads standing at the end of the season for goldfinches. Coneflowers take drought, heat, humidity, and poor soil once established, and they want well-drained ground. Winter wet is the usual cause of failure, so avoid low spots that stay saturated. Deer generally leave them alone.
