Sombrero Sangrita carries scarlet-red flowers on burgundy stems, so the color runs through the whole plant rather than sitting only in the petals. Echinacea 'Balsomanita', sold as Sombrero Sangrita, grows 18 to 22 inches tall and 22 to 24 inches wide in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 4 through Zone 9.
Bloom starts in early summer and reblooms into fall, with a dark cone at the center of each flower. Deadheading extends the display.
The habit is compact and rounded, spreading wider than tall, on stems stiff enough to stand without staking.
Leave the last seedheads standing at the end of the season for goldfinches. Coneflowers take drought, heat, humidity, and poor soil once established, and they want well-drained ground. Winter wet is the usual cause of failure, so avoid low spots that stay saturated. Deer generally leave them alone.
