Sombrero Adobe Orange opens pumpkin orange around a darker orange cone, and the color holds without fading as the flowers age. Echinacea 'Balsomador', sold as Sombrero Adobe Orange, grows 18 to 22 inches tall and 22 to 24 inches wide in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 4 through Zone 9.
Bloom starts in early summer and reblooms into fall, and deadheading keeps it going. The stems are stiff and well-branched, so the flowers stand without staking.
The habit is compact and rounded, wider than it is tall, which suits a container, the front of a border, or a mass planting.
Leave the last seedheads standing at the end of the season for goldfinches. Coneflowers take drought, heat, humidity, and poor soil once established, and they want well-drained ground. Winter wet is the usual cause of failure, so avoid low spots that stay saturated. Deer generally leave them alone.
