Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, acidic soil (pH 4.5–6.0) with generous organic matter. Space 6–10 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 2–3 inches deep.

Care Tips

Water consistently after planting; once established it tolerates moderate drought. Little pruning is needed- remove dead or crossing branches in early spring. Fertilize lightly in spring with an acid fertilizer. The fragrant, bottle-brush, white flowers appear before the leaves in early spring; then the large, bold leaves provide excellent summer interest before turning vivid red, orange, and yellow in fall- among the best native shrubs for fall color. Largely pest-free and deer resistant.
