Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring, spacing 12–18 inches apart in well-drained, average to lean soil. This native penstemon is adapted to dry, lean garden conditions and will not thrive in rich, wet soils. Good drainage is essential. Water regularly for the first few weeks after planting, then reduce significantly as the plant establishes its drought tolerance.

Care Tips

Cut back spent flower stalks after blooming to encourage additional flower production later in the season. Hairy beardtongue is an important nectar plant for hummingbirds and native bees. It tends to be somewhat short-lived as a perennial but reseeds readily in appropriate conditions, perpetuating itself in the garden. No fertilizing is needed — lean soil conditions are actually preferred. A graceful native plant for dry sunny borders.
