Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in a shaded or partially shaded spot with moist, humus-rich soil. Lenten roses are among the most rewarding shade perennials — they are long-lived, evergreen in mild climates, and bloom in late winter when little else is in flower. Incorporate compost into the planting area, space plants 18–24 inches apart, and water well. Mulch 2–3 inches deep.

Care Tips

Cut off all the old foliage in late winter just before the flower stems begin to emerge — this showcases the blooms beautifully and removes any fungal issues that may have developed on the older leaves over winter. Once established, lenten roses are very low maintenance and virtually problem-free. They self-seed gradually over time to slowly fill in shaded areas. No regular fertilizing is needed in organically rich soil.
