Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, well-drained soil. Space 12–18 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting. Good drainage is essential- gayfeather will rot in wet, poorly drained soil.

Care Tips

Water regularly after planting; once established it is highly drought tolerant. The vivid purple flower spikes open from the top downward- the reverse of most spike-flowering plants. Deadhead after flowering to keep the planting tidy. Cut back to the ground in late fall or early spring. Divide every 3–4 years in spring. No fertilization needed in lean soil. Largely pest-free and deer resistant. Outstanding for butterflies and as a cut flower. One of the most important native nectar plants for monarch butterflies during their fall migration.
