Genie Magnolia

Plant in spring in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil in full sun, spacing 10–12 feet apart. Genie is a compact magnolia with deep, velvety red-purple flowers that are more intensely colored than most compact magnolias — blooming in early spring and often reblooming through summer. Dig a generous planting hole, incorporate compost, and water deeply. Mulch generously. Protect from late frost if possible.

Minimal pruning is needed — remove only dead wood in summer after flowering. Avoid pruning in fall or winter. The deep red-purple flowers of Genie are outstanding for early spring color. The compact habit makes it suitable for smaller gardens. Keep soil consistently moist. Fertilize in spring with a balanced fertilizer. Genie often produces additional flowers through summer — a significant advantage over strictly once-blooming magnolia varieties.
