Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in well-drained to dry soil in full sun, spacing 24–30 inches apart. Blue Jean Baby is a compact Russian sage with silvery stems and lavender-blue flower spikes — more manageable in size than standard Russian sage while retaining the same outstanding qualities. It thrives in hot, dry conditions and requires excellent drainage. No soil amendment needed in average to lean soils.

Care Tips

Cut plants back hard to 6–8 inches in early spring — this is essential for the best performance and compact shape. Without hard spring pruning, Russian sage becomes woody and produces fewer flowers. Very drought tolerant once established. No fertilizing needed. The silvery stems and misty blue flowers provide an airy, soft quality in the summer garden. Outstanding for hot, dry sites and at the back of dry, sunny mixed borders. Deer resistant.
