Tassel Fern

Plant in spring in moist, humus-rich soil in partial to full shade. Tassel fern is an unusual, bold, evergreen fern with distinctive, tassel-like tufts at the frond tips that give it its charming common name. It provides year-round interest in shaded gardens. Work compost or leaf mold into the planting area, space plants 18–24 inches apart, and water well. Mulch generously to retain moisture.

Keep soil consistently moist. In mild climates the evergreen fronds persist through winter, providing valuable year-round coverage — remove old fronds in early spring before new growth unfurls. Top-dress with compost or leaf mold each spring. No fertilizing is needed in organically rich soil. The unusual tassel-tipped fronds make this one of the most distinctive and interesting ferns for shaded woodland gardens and mixed shade borders.
