Plant in spring or fall in moist, humus-rich soil in a shaded location. This lenten rose is an excellent, long-lived perennial for difficult shaded spots under trees. Work compost or leaf mold into the planting area. Space plants 18–24 inches apart and water thoroughly after planting. Mulch 2–3 inches deep to keep roots cool and moist.

Remove old foliage in late winter before the flower stems push up from the base — this is the single most important care step and makes a dramatic difference in how the blooms are displayed. Self-seeds slowly over time. Very low maintenance once established. Water during dry spells in summer. No regular fertilizing needed in organically rich soil. An outstanding shade perennial with elegant, nodding flowers.
