Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in well-drained to moist, average soil, spacing 24–30 inches apart. Rain Dance is a big bluestem variety selected for its outstanding, arching habit that creates a more flowing, graceful quality than the typically more upright species. It adapts to a range of soils including clay and moist conditions. No special soil preparation needed. Water well through the first season.

Care Tips

Cut plants back to 6–8 inches in late winter before new growth begins. The graceful, arching habit creates a softer, more flowing garden presence than standard upright big bluestem. Good fall color and attractive seed heads provide multi-season interest. No fertilizing needed in average soils. An excellent, graceful native grass for mixed borders and naturalistic plantings where a more arching, less stiffly upright habit is preferred.
