Delicate lantern-shaped red and yellow flowers hover above compact, fern-like foliage to brighten shady corners. This hardy native attracts hummingbirds early in the season and thrives in woodland settings where other plants struggle.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, well-drained soil. Space 12–15 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting.

Care Tips

Water regularly during the first season and through spring bloom. Deadhead spent flowers to extend bloom, but allow some seed pods to mature for self-sowing- columbine self-seeds freely and seedlings appear nearby each year. Cut foliage back after it declines in summer. Divide every 3–4 years in early spring if clumps become overcrowded. Watch for leaf miners- they create winding trails in leaves but rarely cause serious harm. The dainty, red-and-yellow spurred flowers are the native species columbine of eastern North America, excellent for hummingbirds.
