Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, well-drained to dry soil. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting. Butterfly milkweed has a deep taproot and strongly resents being moved- choose a permanent location.

Care Tips

Water regularly the first season; once established it is highly drought tolerant. Do not fertilize- lean soil produces the best, most compact growth. Mark its location carefully- butterfly milkweed is very slow to emerge in spring. Cut back dead stems in early spring. Do not divide or transplant. The bright yellow flowers are a rare and cheerful color for milkweed, equally attractive to monarch butterflies and other pollinators as the more common orange form. Largely pest-free and deer resistant.
