Plant in spring or fall in average to lean, well-drained soil. Space 12–15 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting. Good drainage is essential- dianthus will not tolerate wet, poorly drained soil, particularly in winter.

Water regularly after planting, then reduce once established- mature plants are moderately drought tolerant. Shear back lightly after the first flush of bloom to encourage continued or repeat flowering and to keep the plant compact. Feed lightly with a balanced fertilizer in early spring. Avoid heavy fertilization, which produces lush but short-lived growth. Deer resistant and largely pest-free.
