Plant in spring or fall in moist to dry, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Space 12–18 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 2–3 inches deep.

Water regularly after planting; once established barrenwort is quite tolerant of dry shade- one of the toughest groundcovers for difficult areas under trees. Cut old foliage to the ground in late winter before the delicate spring flowers emerge, so you can enjoy them without the distraction of old leaves. Divide every 4–5 years in early spring to spread the planting. Largely pest-free and deer resistant.
