Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in moist, well-drained to dry soil in partial to full shade, spacing 12–18 inches apart. Spine Tingler barrenwort produces attractive, spurred spring flowers on a compact plant with nicely textured foliage. Incorporate compost into the planting area and water well. Mulch to retain moisture. It tolerates dry shade exceptionally well once established.

Care Tips

Cut back old foliage in late winter before new growth begins to showcase the delicate spring flowers. Once established, barrenwort is extremely drought tolerant. Spreads gradually by rhizomes to form a dense, weed-suppressing groundcover. No fertilizing is needed in average soils. One of the best native groundcover solutions for difficult dry, shaded areas under established trees and shrubs.
