Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, well-drained soil. Tolerates clay and sandy soils. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting. This native prairie plant thrives in lean conditions- avoid rich or amended beds.

Care Tips

Water regularly the first season to help establish the deep root system; once established it is highly drought tolerant and requires very little supplemental water. Do not fertilize- lean soil produces the best, most authentic growth. The architectural, globe-like flower heads atop spiky, blue-green foliage are unique and dramatic in the garden. Leave seed heads through fall and winter for wildlife and structure. Cut back dead foliage in early spring. Virtually pest-free and deer resistant.
