Planting Tips

Plant with rhizomes just at the soil surface in moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch around the base to retain moisture.

Care Tips

Water deeply and consistently, especially during spring growth and the bloom period- Japanese iris prefers reliably moist to wet conditions and will not perform well in dry soil. Avoid alkaline soil or hard water, which causes yellowing. Allow foliage to grow through summer after bloom to fuel the rhizomes. Cut back in late fall. Divide every 3–4 years in late summer. Fertilize lightly in spring with an acid fertilizer. The large, flat, ruffled flowers are among the most spectacular of any iris.
