Ruffled Velvet Iris

Plant rhizomes in late summer to fall in well-drained soil in full sun. The rhizome should sit at or just at soil level with the top exposed to sunlight — this is critical for healthy growth and good flowering. Space 12–18 inches apart. Amend soil with compost if needed and ensure excellent drainage. Water well after planting.

Divide every three to four years in late summer. Trim leaf fans by one-half at planting and replanting. Remove spent flower stalks after bloom. Fertilize in early spring with a low-nitrogen fertilizer. Keep the tops of rhizomes exposed to sun. Ruffled Velvet produces beautifully ruffled, deep purple-violet flowers with a velvety texture in late spring. The ruffled petals give it a particularly luxurious and distinctive appearance.
