Russell Hybrids Lupine

Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil amended with compost. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch around the base. Lupines have taproots- choose a permanent location and avoid moving them once established.

Water consistently throughout the growing season, especially during dry spells. Deadhead spent flower spikes promptly to encourage a second flush of bloom and to prevent the plant from going to seed, which shortens its life. Cut back after the second bloom. Lupines are short-lived perennials, often lasting only 2–4 years. Allow self-sowing or resow from seed to maintain a colony. Watch for aphids on flower spikes. Largely slug-susceptible in cool, wet conditions.
