Plant in average to lean, well-drained soil. Space 2–3 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting. Highly adaptable to clay and poor soils.

Water regularly the first season; once established it is highly drought tolerant. Cut back to 4–6 inches in late winter or early spring — do not cut back in fall. Divide every 4–5 years in spring. No fertilization needed. Largely pest-free. Cheyenne Sky is one of the most compact and vividly red-toned switchgrass selections available — the foliage turns deep, rich red very early in the season and the compact, upright habit stays well under 3 feet.
